Another question that I get often is, “How do you go to college and homeschool?” Let me tell you what, it is not the easiest at times but we make it work. I want my kids to want to strive for more than what I did. I graduated high school a semester early since I had all of the credits needed. I could have continued the last semester and done some college classes in high school that would have helped me out. Although, all I ever wanted was to get married, move out of my parents house, and have some babies. I seriously pictured June Cleaver when I thought about what I wanted in life. So I ended up getting married shortly after that and started working on the kid thing.
I never in my life thought that I would end up getting a divorce and having to re-plan my life out. When my marriage started getting sour, I decided I needed a back-up plan. I had never worked besides waiting tables in high school really. I had been married for about 7 years at this point. I knew that if I couldn’t make my marriage work, then I was going to be really screwed. I do not have friends or family that could or would help me out. I only had my husband and depended on him 100% for everything I needed. So at that point I decided to sign up for cosmetology school. My youngest was 8 months old and still breastfed for the bulk of his eating. The school was just literally beside my house so I went and talked to them. They were very helpful and allowed me to breastfeed while going to school. My husband worked the night shift, so he was home with the kids; when the baby got hungry he brought him over for me to feed or I would run to the house quickly. I have to say I was able to stay in school and breastfeed him until he self weaned!!! On with the story, my marriage ended and I still couldn’t find a job in my field. So it was then it dawned on me that I needed to go to real college. Here I am, a single stay at home mom, though. Lo and behold, I learned of online classes. So I signed up and got the ball rolling.
Our days are hectic but usually I can study while they are working on something. A lot of times I can put what I am studying in with their studies which helps us all. When I took astronomy we all learned together about it, so it made it much easier for me to study since they were doing it, too. I won’t lie; it isn’t always easy, and some classes give me such a work load that I want to scream! The kids have learned that mommy has to do school work as well and they get some reading time in.
