Scripture Memorization Series – James 1

I hope you’ve been following along with us in this study.

This month we are going to think about James chapter 1, verses 21-24.

21.Therefore, lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23.  For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24. for he observes himself, goes away and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

Let’s take a peek at verse 21.

Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

This verse gives an action and an explanation.

As I think about the action part, I have to examine my life and think:

  • What do I need to lay aside?
  • What is filthy in my life?
  • What am I apart of that is wicked?

The answers to these questions will look different for everyone as we are all living very unique lives.

For me personally, the phrase “lay aside the overflow of wickedness” stands out to me. I immediately think of my negative thoughts that over-spill into my actions and words in my relationships. Can anyone relate? Please tell me you can. Have any of you lashed out in anger? Regretted words to your loved ones? Or just acted plain selfish? All because of your thoughts and bad attitude.

I am encouraged to take hold of my thoughts so that I can lay aside the overflow of wickedness. The way to combat this is to practice what it says in Philippians 4:8. Dwell on the the things that are pure and lovely.

We must take these words in meekness, which means that we must be humble and have a teachable spirit, for that will save our souls.

Also, I just want to add that after I had already finished this post, I was drinking my coffee and reading one morning and I noticed that my  coffee cup scripture and what I was reading were exactly what I had typed for this post. Had to share!

The next verse:

22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

This is a mouthful. Long sermons have been preached on this one concept.

The question I ask myself is:

Do I believe the Bible is absolutely true? Is the story true? God the creator, Jesus the Redeemer, Heaven, Hell, and so one?

I ABSOLUTELY do believe that the Bible is solid truth.

Then- if you hear it and believe it- then there is no question to be had – DO IT! LIVE IT!

It’s a pretty big, important story and I’m THANKFUL to be a part of it. I mean, if you believe it- Why wouldn’t you live it?

Verse 23 and 24.

For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

We must be doers. We must Live. What. We. Believe.

What does that look like for you?
