Refinement Outside of Our Comfort Zone {Lenten Journey Week 5}

When was the last time you felt truly ALIVE? Think about it. Can you put a name to that thing, that eye opening, soul awakening, life defining thing that makes you want to shout it from the mountaintops?

This Lenten Journey has caused my heart to yearn for a daily awakening like never before. And I’ve wondered, is it possible? It’s a question I’ve asked myself over and over again as I feel God prodding this girl to shed her skin, shed the things of this world and everything that hinders.

What truly makes me feel ALIVE?

The answer I arrived at surprised me, but only for a moment. When I recount the timeline of my life, the one thing I come back to over and over again is this: The core of who I am feels most alive when I am called to step out of my comfort zone and into God’s comfort zone…and I do it!

This zone, God’s holy zone, it’s often uncomfortable for us to enter. In fact, it can be downright terrifying and cause us to tremble with fear if we focus on the seen, instead of the unseen. God leads us to places that will often challenge us down to the very core. So, when we’re standing on the edge between our stale comfort and rebellious ways and we hear the the call from Jesus to live a life that is fully ALIVE, what will we choose?

I think of Peter in Matthew 14 who stepped out of a boat that was not sinking and into those cold uncomfortable waters. Jesus challenged him to believe. He was calling him to trust and believe with all of his heart, mind and soul. I wonder, was this one of those moments in Peter’s life where he felt truly alive? Perhaps more alive than ever before? When his own insecurities and fear collided with the possibilities of what Jesus could do with the kind of belief it would take to walk on water…did he ever feel more vulnerable and alive in his life than at that moment?

As we stand before Jesus and He calls us to Himself, what will we do? Will we lay down that thing we can’t possibly think we can live without? It might mean doing something really hard, even something no one else will understand. But if we’re going to live our lives on purpose, with purpose and for a purpose, we’re going to need to trust our Savior who calls us to a faith that is radical and very much ALIVE.

Friends, will you pray with me?

Lord, help us today to stand in your presence, ready to do your will. Here we are Lord. Show us how to sink into you instead of the doubt and fear that threatens to consume us. Increase our faith in You, Father, give us a confidence like we’ve never had before and a boldness to share it with others. Search our hearts and reveal to us any sins that are lurking so we may be ready to confess them to you, You, who shed your blood for us on the cross. Your comfort zone often requires that we do some shedding ourselves. Thank you Jesus for being our strength and giving us grace in these refining moments of life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
