Ways to Combat Mommy Fatigue

If you are reading this post right now, my guess is that you have experienced Mommy Fatigue on some level. Perhaps you are going through a hard bout of mommy fatigue right now. Maybe it is something you experienced in the distant past but anticipate going through in the very near future. No matter how or when you’ve gone through it, if you have experienced this fatigue I speak of, this article is for you.

Does this scenario sound familiar to you?

You get out of bed, eyes heavy, body telling you, “Go back to sleep!” while your mind is saying, “Must. Get. Up.” Then you muster up the strength to get on your robe when you hear, “Mom! I’m hungry! Can you please cook us breakfast?!” Just as these two sentences begin to make sense in your mind, you hear the baby crying — baby needs to be nursed now. And all the while you are trying to make sure you keep one foot in front of the other just to make it to the next room to take care of that precious hungry baby. Then the phone rings…

Oh boy, I am quite sure that this scenario or one like it has been the plight of every mom at some point or another. While the scenarios can play themselves out in immeasurable ways, the end result is the same: Mommy is fatigued. I have lived out this mommy fatigue immeasurable times and know the temptation to stay in a state of constantly being overwhelmed is tempting. However, rather than stay fatigued, let’s talk about some ways that can help you fight against it and end up with more energy to care for those you love while enjoying life as a whole.

Ways to Combat Mommy Fatigue

1. Find a scripture (or two or three) that become your ammo against mommy fatigue. What do I mean? I mean that we are going to use the Word of God as our first defense in fighting against being tired all the time. Believe me, it works. Without this step, you will be setting yourself up for failure as we cannot do this on our own. We need God’s power that comes through the promises found in His Word as the primary measure against mommy fatigue. Once you find your scripture(s) speak them out loud daily – thanking God for the victory in this area of your life!

2. Rest has to become like air – you need it to survive. I know, I know. “But, I can’t sleep, you just don’t understand.” Yes, I actually do. I am a homeschool mother of multiple children that has had every type of health issue imaginable from a mild heart attack to major surgery (x3). I also have a husband who has deployed 5 times for a year each time which is no walk in the park for me. And the scenarios go on and on. The bottom line? I have learned that in order to thrive in life, I have to make sure that at any cost, I need to get an ample amount of rest to let my body heal and reset each day. If I don’t do this, the mommy fatigue has already won, and for me this is just not an option.

2. Water, water, and more water. Does this mean you have to always drink water? Not necessarily. Although I love water, I also get water from my foods – primarily fresh raw fruits and vegetables. However you get it, you need to get it. It is really important that you actually get water and not sugar. Kool-Aid doesn’t count for this one.

3. Limit sugary foods and drinks. This is a HUGE one. If you drink soda or any other sugary drink, you are making your body work overtime and actually sending it into a diabetic shock each time you drink these beverages. Not only is this a waste of energy, but it also is a major cause for unnecessary weight gain which can lead to fatigue. Bottom line, begin to replace these with non-sugar items. However, I would not recommend any artificial sweeteners as they are linked to cancer. Try using all natural sweeteners like raw local honey or raw natural sugar in small quantities. Be realistic and do it gradually. It will take some time to be successful in this area of your life, but it will be well worth it!

4. Exercise. I know, this is stuff you have heard before, but are you doing it? Whenever I find myself fatigued, I can tell you right now that I am not exercising often – or not at all. With our busy lives it is easy to fall off the wagon with this one and make every excuse in the book. But the truth is that we cannot afford not to exercise. I am not saying you have to join the local gym and spend hours a day working out. However, you need to do something each day to get your heart rate up. It can be walking briskly, jumping rope, running (my personal favorite), riding a bike, etc. Whatever your thing is, make sure you do it as often as possible. And include the children as well. What better foundation for their bodies can we give them than to teach them young to exercise?

5. Eliminate processed and fast foods whenever possible. I remember when we first took this plunge over 10 years ago. It was scary because the price tag of raw, natural, and organic foods is a lot heftier than that of processed foods. However, one resolve my husband and I had to make is this: You cannot put a price on your health. We didn’t do this overnight, but a decade into it, you will find it an absolute rare occasion that anything processed goes into our bodies.

6. Pray for wisdom. This component is just as important as any other. Without God’s wisdom you will not know the timing and steps you need to take for your own personal victory against mommy fatigue. Prayer is the icing on the cake of defeating mommy fatigue once and for all. And it is even better if you pray with someone else as agreement will give us that much more power against the enemy. Don’t forget there is power in numbers!

7. Watch your mouth. Yep, I said it. You need to be careful that words you are speaking are lining up with God’s Word and what you are believing Him to accomplish in this area of your life! No more speaking doubt and unbelief. No more saying things like: I will never have energy again, I feel like these kids suck the life out of me, I will be tired for the rest of my life, etc. No more! These words only tear you down and make you believe those lies about yourself. It also teaches your children the direct opposite of God’s Word, and you don’t want to do that now, do you? I didn’t think so (smile).

While God might show you other areas where you need to work some things out to beat mommy fatigue once and for all, by keeping the 7 areas above in mind at all times, you are off to an amazing start. No more excuses. Let’s do this! We can do this together. I will support you and you can support me through prayer and encouragement. I am rooting for you! You can do this!

    Thank you for your post! I really appreciated the tips. My favorite is #1 and it’s also the area I probably lack the most. My days almost always start like you described in the first paragraph and sometimes it’s lunchtime and I’ve forgotten to have my Spiritual food for the day or even pray for wisdom and peace. Peace is important when you have kids in the house!
